“Apple TV is ‘essentially dead’? No, long live Apple TV.”
Unsurprising to anyone who reads this blog, I’m sure, but I agree with Snell here. The Apple TV has taken over as the only way we watch TV in my household (we were TiVo holdouts for as long as was practicable). We even watch live TV on an app on the Apple TV. It’s the only box out there that isn’t completely enshittified. That said, Apple hasn’t given it nearly enough love and attention, and that hopefully will change with the rumored refresh. I’m not happy about the price increases, but I’m happy to pay a premium over getting an ad-filled experience like the others in the market. Hell, I wouldn’t take one of the other experiences if it were free.
(The fact that the complaint about the launcher on the Google devices mentioned in the linked post also applies to the individual apps, even on the Apple TV, is another issue, of course. Every time I launch an app that doesn’t integrate with the Apple TV properly, I have to scroll down quite a bit just to get to the show I’m actually watching. Infuriating!)
