Scott's Thoughts

Andrew J. Hawkins, writing at The Verge:

Today, the company that spun out of that effort, Also, unveiled its first batch of products: a modular e-bike, a pedal-powered four-wheeler, and an innovative bike helmet that is said to dramatically decrease the chance of head injury in a crash.

Wow, there are some really neat ideas here. I love the idea of micro-mobility devices like these!

One concern about the TM-B, though: they show pictures of it with knobby mountain bike tires on what look to be fire roads. That might be fine in some places, but the TM-B is said to be a Class 3 e-bike, capable of 28 MPH. Most trails—if they allow e-bikes at all—restrict e-bike access to Class 1, which is limited to 20 MPH. While this isn't going to be mistaken for a real e-MTB, we already see kids on trails with machines they shouldn't have on them—essentially electric dirt bikes/motorcycles. With no real licensing requirements, it's hard to expect average people to know what they're allowed to do with things like this.
