"Weiss’ Recruiting Woes"
Oliver Darcy, writing for Status:
Over at CBS News headquarters, tucked away on the West Side of Manhattan, Bari Weiss is hard at work trying to lure prominent talent to the news network as she seeks to reverse its fortunes and reengineer it for a digital future. Armed with what appears to be a sizable war chest—much of it likely to be freed up by impending cuts—the newly-anointed editor has been aggressively pitching journalists to join CBS News.
...
One of those targets was Joanna Stern, the prominent technology columnist who recently exited The Wall Street Journal after more than a decade at the newspaper. According to people familiar with the matter, Weiss personally courted Stern and offered her a lucrative deal to become a multiplatform journalist at CBS News. During a discussion, it was even suggested that the offer could reach seven figures annually. Even so, Stern passed, opting instead to launch her own independent media venture, which she teased earlier this month.
Good for Joanna Stern. I've appreciated her run at The Wall Street Journal, where she frequently reported on the Apple beat, and she's always come across as a person with integrity. It can't be easy to turn down an "eye-popping" offer. I hope her new venture is a success.
Weiss’ Recruiting Woes
As Bari Weiss works to put her stamp on CBS News, her aggressive recruiting push is running up against a difficult reality: top talent keeps turning her down.
