This is only the fifth time that The Atlantic has endorsed a candidate for president, and three of those endorsements has been in opposition to Donald Trump. The other two were for Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon Johnson. (Yes, The Atlantic has been published continuously for 167 years. That makes it the third longest running periodical in US history—only Scientific American and Harper’s Magazine have had longer runs. Notably, Scientific Americanalso endorsed Harris against Trump—only its second endorsement ever.)
