Winners & Losers: ‘Supergirl’ Crashes Out, ‘House of the Dragon’ Remains Meh

Milly Alcock survives a ‘Supergirl’ wipeout. ‘House of the Dragon’ somehow underwhelms while dramatically improving. Movie influencers lose influence. Apple flexes.

www.hollywoodreporter.com

As much as I dislike The Hollywood Reporter’s website due to its shocking ad load and visual shitstorm, I enjoyed this post by James Hibberd. My thoughts on some of the article’s points:

Supergirl

Ainsley and I saw Supergirl (★★☆☆☆) at its fan premiere event, and the take given in the article is about how I saw it, if a bit too harsh. I think Milly Alcock was good, but Kara Zor-El as a character was a bit too unlikeable to be a solo movie hero. And the article is spot-on about the action sequences, in that they were just too frenetic and lacked focus. That’s a decent way to describe the plot too: it contained juvenile motivations for most of the characters, and the galaxy-spanning trip failed to be fun, and instead was a bit tiresome.

House of the Dragon

I wouldn’t rate House of the Dragon’s season three premiere as harshly, though. I enjoyed it quite a bit and am glad to hear that critics are bullish on the season.

Apple TV

Regarding the bit on Apple TV programming, I’ve enjoyed the shows I’ve watched, although I have to admit to bouncing off of the popular Pluribus and The Studio. I’ve heard strong things about Widow’s Bay, so it’s on the list to watch. I’m glad to read that Apple is doubling down here.
